We are proud to annouce that Corbitt started walking shortly after his 5th birthday this past November. It is obvious that he's loving his new found freedom of being an independent walker.
I didn't realize how much I took having a healthy child for granted until Corbitt was born 6 weeks too soon. His older sister Courtney was full term and healthy...we only went to the doctor for "well care" visits and an occasional cold or ear infection, nothing major at all.
Corbitt's stay in the NICU was just a day shy of 3 weeks and he was considered to be a "big" preemie at 5 lbs and 11 oz; however, he did come home on medicine around the clock which was a wake up call for us because we had to stay on schedule with all of his medications and we still do to this day.
Corbitt has been receiving physical, occupational, speech and developmental therapy since he was 4 months old and that was something very new to all of us. I notice that we Celebrate each and every little milestone that he achieves.
Every year, half a million babies in the U.S. are born prematurely. Premature birth is the leading cause of newborn death and many life long disabilities. The funds we raise in WalkAmerica support research that saves babies' lives.
The mission of March of Dimes is to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth, and infant mortality.
